![]() Undeterred, writes Bruce, Marina “made the sign of holy Christ, and, as this sign went down ahead of the rest of her, they ruptured the dragon’s innards. The monster threatened her, ignored her prayers and swallowed her whole. Thrown in jail and tortured by a Roman official who wanted to sexually violate her, Marina encountered a demon in the form of a dragon. Similarly, the Byzantine historian Michael Psellos wrote in the 11th century of a dragon that tormented Saint Marina. The bishop bonked the dragon on the head three times, led it through Paris on a leash, then banished it back to the forest so it would never trouble the city again. In the sixth century, for example, French bishop and poet Venantius Fortunatus wrote about a bishop of Paris named Marcellus, who, in front of the gathered citizens of the city, drove off a dragon that had devoured a sinful noblewoman’s corpse. Though they sometimes appeared as foes to be overcome in valiant single combat, dragons in the European Middle Ages more often figured in accounts about the lives of saints and religious figures than stories of heists and adventures. Illuminated manuscript featuring Saint Marina and the dragon According to Bruce, one of the reasons he collaborated with Penguin on the series is that he wanted to make “these fascinating themes … accessible to general readers,” demonstrating that monsters of the past are not the same as modern ones. Collections of texts from the ancient, medieval and early modern worlds, these books allow readers to see for themselves how people from the past thought about things that went bump in the night. In 2016, he published The Penguin Book of the Undead, and in 2018, The Penguin Book of Hell. Over the past few years, Bruce, a historian at Fordham University, has developed wide-ranging expertise in how medieval people talked about monsters. Two thousand years of legend and lore about the menace and majesty of dragons, which have breathed fire into our imaginations from ancient Rome to "Game of Thrones" Buy The Penguin Book of Dragons (Penguin Classics) As historian Scott Bruce, editor of the newly released Penguin Book of Dragons, explains, dragons in the medieval mindset stood “as the enemies of humankind, against which we measure the prowess of our heroes.” As such, they were neatly and easily folded into Christian tradition, “often cast … as agents of the devil or demons in disguise.” But dragons held a special place in both the modern imagination and the medieval one. Medieval people told tales about all kinds of monsters, including ghosts, werewolves and women who turned into serpents on Saturdays. In the European Middle Ages, monster stories served as religious teaching tools, offering examples of what not to do, manifestations of the threats posed by the supernatural and the diabolical, and metaphors for the evil humans do to one another. Though horror today is most often about entertainment-the thrill of the jump scare or the suspense of the thriller-it hasn’t always been that way. Dragons and other monsters, nights dark and full of terror, lurked largely in the domain of stories-tales, filtered through the intervening centuries and our own interests, that remain with us today.Īs Halloween approaches, we’re naturally thinking about scary stories. Named after Anubis the god of death, this previously unknown amphibious species was about ten feet long with an impressive jaw that indicates a raptor-like feeding style, according to a new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. ![]() Finally, the goddess is referenced in the tragedy plays of Euripides and Sophocles, amongst others, and in Virgil's Aeneid where she acts as Sibyl's guide in the Underworld.A 43-million-year-old fossil of prehistoric whale with four legs and very sharp teeth has been found in the Egyptian desert. It was a common practice to place images of the triple goddess on city walls, in particular, at city gates, entrances to sacred sites and the doorways of private homes where it was believed she acted as a protectress and warded off evil spirits. The 2nd-century BCE Pergamon Altar of Zeus has a three-headed Hecate attacking a snake-like giant, helped by a dog. Known as hekataia, the first example of the triple-Hecate form is credited to a figure which guarded the entrance to the Acropolis of Athens, the Hekate Epipyrgidia ('On the Ramparts') by the 5th-century BCE sculptor Alcamenes. The goddess, though, usually appears with human heads. The historian Robert Graves notes that the heads could be of a dog, lion, and horse, which represented the constellations which cover the calendar year. In sculpture, her most striking appearance occurs in Classical and Hellenistic Period figures which have the goddess with three bodies and three heads (or a single body with three heads or three bodies and a single head), usually with halos of moonbeams. The goddess was especially appealed to by sorceresses for aid in their magic and spells and appears on surviving examples of curse tablets. The offerings to the goddess were made each month during the night of a new moon. A further canine connection may be with the Egyptian god Anubis who guided souls to the underworld, and the Greek three-headed hound of Hades, Cerberus, may be an earlier form of Hecate. The dog connection may be the fact that dogs were known to eat the dead if left unburied they also howl at the moon, of course. Hecate was also offered the sacrifice of dogs, especially puppies. ![]() These took the form of small cakes of eggs, cheese, bread, and dog meat, which were lit with miniature torches or, alternatively, a dish of red mullet, which was usually prohibited from offerings to the other gods. The goddess had unusual rituals performed in her honour in the Greek religion, which include the offerings of food - given at crossroads, road junctions, and any other sort of boundary or threshold - known as 'the supper of Hecate'. Her companions are the Furies (Erinyes), the winged creatures who punished wrong-doing, and her children are the Empusae, female demons partial to seducing travellers. Hesiod goes on to say that Hecate supports or is a protective goddess of warriors, athletes, hunters, horsemen, herdsmen, shepherds, fishermen, and children. For even now, whenever any human on the earth seeks propitiation by performing fine sacrifices according to custom, he invokes Hecate and much honor very easily stays with that man whose prayers the goddess accepts with gladness, and she bestows happiness upon him. Zeus, Cronus' son, honoured above all others: he gave her splendid gifts - to have a share of the earth and of the barren sea, and from the starry sky as well she has a share in honour, and is honoured most of all by the immortal gods. Hesiod describes the goddess in the following glowing terms: Intrinsically ambivalent and polymorphous, she straddles conventional boundaries and eludes definition. …outlandish in her infernal aspects, she is more at home on the fringes than in the centre of Greek polytheism. ![]() Fantasy-based games with gunpowder weapons never appealed to me since they seemed incongruous. The game certainly looked the part, and featured graphics on par with any of the modern RPG games out these days, but that’s not the most important aspect of a game of course. I looked around a bit and spoke to a few of the locals and eventually gained my first quest, which was something about investigating the source of a recent series of undead attacks originating from a nearby burial area. I was given a rather generic looking character and unceremoniously plopped down into a little grungy town called Devil’s Crossing. After receiving the game, downloading it, installing it, and firing it up, I felt sort of let down that I wasn’t presented with some sort of snazzy intro. Having said that, my first brush with Crate Entertainment’s recently Kickstarted dynamo, Grim Dawn, wasn’t a good one. Kickstarted games have allowed original ideas and incredibly immersive worlds to be shared by everyone, instead of being relegated to the sidelines while the monolithic (and in many cases full of hubris) gaming publishers seize all of the glory and lime light. Where previously, indie titles were relegated to the periphery, stuck in the shadows of the big, corporate, triple-A gaming companies, these days all of the highly creative folk out there can make it happen and get their projects funded outside of the big dogs. Let me begin this review by saying: “Thank goodness for Kickstarter!” Crowdfunding platforms have completely re-shaped the gaming industry in a very favorable way. ![]() However, as discussed above, where these theories appear inadequate, the differential association theory seems capable of providing convincing answers.Īdditionally, the differential association theory can be applied to all age groups since the factor of learned behavior it incorporates is not strictly restricted to people within a certain age bracket. Well-known criminological theories, such as the social disorganization theory and the cultural deviance theory, which seem to focus more on blue collar crimes, cannot convincingly explain organized crime and white-collar crimes (Drew, 2021). The differential association theory would explain this situation by stating that individuals who have closer and more associations with criminals than with non-criminals were more likely to join the Mafia (Sutherland, 1950). In fact, even during the peak of the American Mafia during the 1960/70s, the NYPD comprised many Italian-Americans, some of whose close family members were part of the Mafia. What bears noting, however, is that despite the influence of the surrounding culture, not all members of mafia families necessarily join the organized crime network. Having family members already involved in its structure functions as a potent invitation to potential members. People tend to join the mafia, often growing up inside its culture (Drew, 2021). Though criminal conduct could express general values and needs, they do not explain wrongdoing since non-criminal behavior can convey the same values and needs. The process of learning criminal conduct via association with anti-criminal and criminal patterns involves all mechanisms associated with other types of learning. While quantitative rating and the construction of ratios in this regard remain possible, developing formulae to measure the factors above seems difficult. This postulate considers selective influence, related emotional reactions, the role of a criminal pattern’s prestige, etc. Differential associations might vary in duration, intensity, frequency, and priority. This principle implies that encounters with criminal patterns should surpass the exposure to anticriminal patterns for transgression to arise and that neutral associations, if at all, exert little impact on the genesis of crime. When the rationalizations of violating the law exceed the abovementioned interpretations unfavorable to violating the law, a person chooses delinquency. The direction of drives toward criminal conduct is learned via the interpretation of local laws as unfavorable or favorable. The rationalization of wrongdoing to oneself and others. Criminal conduct is learned: This proposition assumes that a person does not engage in transgression without having learned it.The theory’s capacity to explain a broad range of criminal conduct could not escape notice, and Sutherland’s contribution remains relevant to criminology to this day. Sutherland introduced his theory in 1939 in the 3rd edition of his work Principles of Criminology and presented a refined version of the same later in 1947. in sociology from the University of Chicago, responded by drawing on the work of Shaw, McKay, Sellin, and Wirth and developing the differential association theory employing rigorous scientific methods. Edwin Sutherland, who had earned his Ph.D. The philosopher Mortimer Adler and Columbia Law Professor Jerome Michael, in particular, underscored this drawback publicly in a joint critique of criminology. Prior to the development of the differential association theory, the field of criminology suffered from a manifest paucity of scientific theories capable of accounting for criminal conduct (Vinney, 2021). ![]() Craft a toasty cold suit, sip on piping hot coffee, and warm up next to Thermal Lilies to stave off the chill. With iThoughts there was more to learn and more that I could do. After an hour of using them I felt like I’d gotten a solid handle on how they each work (very similar) but also had the sense that I’d reached the limit of MindNode’s feature set. It’s got support for markdown in the notes for nodes, the ability to import a greater variety of objects, and far more export/sharing options. Also, two finger tap to undo is a nice touch and a feature I’m coming to like thanks to Procreate and the Affinity apps.īut iThoughts seems to be the more capable app. It’s also got newly announced support for second, external USB C monitors which might be nice for some. MindNode is better in the area of visual style with a couple of added features. I spent an hour with each app and came away with the impression that iThoughts is a more powerful app in almost every way. Yesterday I saw the new version of MindNode was released so I downloaded it for the free 2 week trial. As it happens I’ve got a new project coming up that would probably benefit from actually diving in with this kind of app. I’d previously purchased iThoughts and used it a little but my projects don’t often require that kind of app. ![]() Seeing this makes me want to try out SLI and CrossFire results, and I'm hoping that performance improves with the upcoming DX12 patch - although, I have a big feeling AMD is going to walk away as an even bigger winner. NVIDIA's fastest consumer graphics card in the GeForce GTX 1080 can't even manage 30FPS average, with just 24FPS average at 4K in Mankind Divided. AMD's Radeon R9 Fury X suffers more here with its minimum frames, with just 7FPS minimum - the lowest on our benchmark charts at 4K, even against the RX 470 and GTX 1060. NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition spits out just 13FPS average, while the RX 470 plods along with 14FPS, and the RX 480 with 16FPS average. 30FPS average is the absolute bare minimum for me to personally recommend that you play at, and nothing is capable of that right now. This is where the fun begins, and none of our cards, the GeForce GTX 1080 included, can manage 30FPS average in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The 4GB of framebuffer begins to suffer on the R9 Fury X, with lower minimum frames than the GTX 980 Ti, GTX 1070, and GTX 1080 graphics cards. The real battle happens in the high-end area, with the HBM1-powered R9 Fury X beating the GTX 1070, and only 5FPS average away from the GP104-powered GeForce GTX 1080. AMD's new Radeon RX 470 graphics cards start from just $199, so to see this type of performance and win over the GTX 1060 at 1440p for a card that can be picked up for around $100 less, is a great thing for AMD Radeon gamers. NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition managed just 25FPS average at 2560x1440, while the best bang for buck Polaris-based card from AMD - the Radeon RX 470 - beat the GTX 1060 by 16%. This is where things get more fun, as more stress is applied to the graphics card - but who comes out on top? Once again, we have some impressive results from AMD, with the Radeon RX 470 even beating out the GeForce GTX 1060 - and the Fury X with some more surprising results, beating everything but the GeForce GTX 1080. Even the older Radeon R9 Fury X is faster than the new GeForce GTX 1070, and edging on the heels of the GTX 1080, too. MSI's Radeon RX 480 Gaming X 8G is only $299, so it's 50% cheaper at $149 less, and it's only 10.8% slower. More interestingly, the overclocked RX 480 is only 4FPS away from the GeForce GTX 1070 which starts at $449. Remember that both of these cards are currently $299 on Amazon. AMD walks away with 46FPS average at 1080p, while the GTX 1060 is capable of just 37FPS - leaving AMD with a huge 24% lead. Now to make things clear, I tested out MSI's Radeon RX 480 Gaming X 8G, which is an overclocked RX 480 - against NVIDIA's own GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition, which has pretty damn high boost clocks anyway.Ĭomparing the MSI RX 480 against the GTX 1060 at 1080p in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was interesting, as it has the Radeon RX 480 slamming the GeForce GTX 1060 in a huge way. Looking closer at the 1080p performance, let's pull two cards out and see their respective performance - AMD's Radeon RX 480 and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060. ![]() The Radeon RX 460 still pumps away with 20FPS average, and could easily handle 30FPS average with some tweaks to the visual settings, like dropping down to the Medium preset. I wasn't going to test the Radeon RX 460 since it really is a low-end card, but low-end graphics card owners play games, too - right? I benched all of the cards at all resolutions on the Ultra preset, disabling anti-aliasing on all tests. I'll also be doing another article on Mankind Divided once DX12 support is here, to see if we have performance improvements on these cards.Īs soon as the DX12 update is pushed out, I'll re-run all of the tests again under DX12 and write it up. I've tested a bunch of cards at 1920x1080, 2560x1440, and 3840x2160 - but if you guys want some 3440x1440 results for UltraWide gaming goodness in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, let me know and I'll run that soon and get some results up.
